Saxon Railway Museum

The railway museum at Chemnitz is located in the Hilbersdorf locomotive depot which closed in 1992. Its buildings, now designated historical monuments, include two roundhouses with 20 m turntables, water cranes, facilities for supplying locomotives with coal and sand, and inspection pits. Its large collection of locomotives includes examples on loan from the transport museums at Dresden and Nürnberg, and from private owners. The collection reflects principally the railways of the former kingdom of Saxony and the former DDR. It includes two steam locomotives with particular links to Chemnitz, a 2-cylinder 2-10-0 of class 43, built by Henschel in 1926, of a type which worked from the Holbersdorf depot, and a class 38 (or XII H2) 4-6-0 built in the city for the railways of Saxony in 1910. There are also main line diesel locomotives, principally of types built by the DDR, and narrow gauge locomotives from feldbahnen (i.e. private lines serving industrial concerns, the military or forestry enterprises not open to the public). A Krieglok 2-10-0 steam locomotive regularly works excursion trains. The museum organises a Boiler House Festival (Heizhaustage) every August when preserved locomotives from all over Germany are displayed at Chemnitz.
