SAME Historical Archives & Historical Museum

The SAME archive and museum at Treviglio, 20 km south of Bergamo, provides documentary services to collectors of and researchers into tractors throughout Europe. The brothers Francesco and Eugenio Cassani built the pioneering diesel Cassani 40CV tractor in Treviglio from 1927, and formed a new company Societá Accomandita Motori Endotermici (SAME) in 1942. Their first significant post-war product in 1946 was a motor mower that could worked other machines, and was effectively a tractor. They began to produce a universal 20 hp tractor in 1948, made their first all-wheel drive tractor in 1952, and introduced the celebrated Explorer range of tractors in 1958. SAME took over several other Italian makers of tractors and agricultural machinery and in 1995 acquired Klöckner-Humboldt-Deutz.

The documentation centre, opened in 2004 includes 200,000 technical drawings, 20,000 other archived items and 6,000 photographs of trade shows, product launches and field trials. The museum, opened in 2008, has a substantial display of agricultural machinery tractors including some made by Lamborghini in the 1950s. The historical atlas of tractors maintained at Treviglio provides help to restorers.
