Royal Museum of the Armed Forces and Military History

This national museum furthers knowledge of twelve centuries of military history in times of war and peace. In the 1910 World Fair held in Brussels, a young officer called Louis Leconte brought together some 900 objects that illustrated Belgium’s military past. In 1923, the exhibition moved to large galleries with glass and iron roofs in Cinquantenaire Park, a great national exhibition complex designed by Gédéon Bordiau. The greatly expanded collections now occupy five large exhibition galleries and 400,000m². The Aviation Hall displays military and civilian aircraft such as the Nieuport 17 and the Sopwith Camel. The Bordiau Gallery provides an overview of military history in Belgium and Europe between 1919 and 1945 with over 2,000 collection items, including uniforms, arms and soldiers’ belongings. Other exhibitions include an armour gallery, a marine section and a tanks department. The site also has a library, archive centre, shop and café.
