"Pozo Julia" Mining Park

Belonging to the Company Antracitas de Fabero, the construction of the Pozo Julia mining shaft started in the year 1947. This three-story vertical shaft reaches 275 meters in depth was accessed through a headframe with an elevator to transport both people and mining shuttle cars. It was in this mine, in 1962, that the brush-based winning machine was the first used in Spain, a modern piece of machinery for extracting coal that increased yields and reduce the number of staff needed while also representing a technological breakthrough in the Spanish mining sector. The coal reserves were exhausted in 1991, the mine was closed down and the miners were laid off.

In 2007 the municipality of Fabero took over the plant, restored the preserved surface installations with their machinery and equipment and set up a signposted circuit for visitors. At each visitable area, visitors can download an audio guide that gives information on the  workings and use of representative spaces such as the lamp room, the compressor room, and the headframe while also learning about the work of those employed here.
