Portland Basin Museum

Housed within the restored nineteenth century Ashton Canal Warehouse the museum combines a lively modern interior with a peaceful canal side setting. Portland Basin Museum is an exciting family friendly museum, with something for all the family!

Step back in time on our 1920s street, as the sights and sounds of bygone Tameside are brought to life. Take a look into our kitchen and parlour to find out how we used to live. Discover what life was like down the mines, or on the farm. Explore local crafts and industries and marvel at our historic machines. You can even drive a model canal boat, or play schoolyard games of yesteryear.

The Museum lies seven miles to the east of Manchester. The local borough of Tameside takes its name from the River Tame which helped power the Industrial Revolution two centuries ago. During this period a complex network of canals was constructed which linked Tameside with the rest of the country, bringing in supplies of raw material to feed the developing industries and thriving local towns.

The area of Portland Basin is at the hub of Tameside´s canal network. Here the three canals meet and it is known as Dukinfield Junction amongst the canal fraternity. It is a good starting point for exploration along the canals especially as it is the location of the Portland Basin Museum.
