Polska Grupa Energetyczna (PGE), founded in 1990, is the largest electricity generator in Poland with 40 power stations and two lignite (brown coal) mines. Its Bełchatów lignite power station is one of the biggest generators in the world. The company’s Giants of Power exhibition is housed at the municipal theatre and gallery in the town centre: Miejskie Centrum Kultury w Bełchatowie. The interactive exhibition extends over two storeys. Visitors take a choice of audio tours for adults and children and learn about the formation and mining of lignite and how electricity is generated through play, models and graphics. They walk through reconstructions of the geological strata and the ancient environments where lignite was formed, seeing remains of plants and animals from the mine, including an ancient forest and a mammoth. The history of the Bełchatów mine and power plant are also set out and visitors can try operating a power-station control desk. A viewing platform can be visited separately at the lignite mine 27km away at Żłobnica.
