"Pfefferberg" refers to an area with listed buildings and three new buildings on an area of 13,504 sqm in the Berlin district of Prenzlauer Berg.
The Pfeffer brewery was the first bottom-fermented brewery north of the former city limits of Berlin. The Bavarian master brewer Joseph Pfeffer founded it in the middle of the 19th century. His successors increased the output of beer and erected further production buildings, and the serving of beer flourished in the beer garden opened in 1844. Then, after almost 80 years of beer production, chocolate was produced on the site, and later bread was baked. After the Second World War the printing house Neues Deutschland moved in and printed the newspaper of the same name here, as well as art books and crime novels.
In the 1980s young architects developed the idea of a Pfefferberg culture factory. Thanks to many supporters it was brought to life in 1990. Those interested in culture can now find galleries for architecture and contemporary art, a museum for architectural drawings, a theatre and other event rooms at Pfefferberg. There are regular concerts and readings. The Pfefferbett Hostel offers reasonably priced overnight accommodation on the premises, various locations offer good food and the taproom also offers beer from the local brewery. Pfefferberg as a location for education is characterised by the ICI Kulturlabor Berlin, the training department of Pfefferwerk Stadtkultur gGmbH, the AEDES Campus and the WeTek-Erzieherfachschule.
