Peat Park

The 180 ha Veenpark is an open-air museum of the peat-digging industry, based in a village established in the 19th century by poor farmers from Hanover, who made habitable a region of impassable bogs. Exhibits include hand tools and steam-powered machines used for cutting peat, and peat presses. Visitors can travel in one of the boats used for carrying peat, and on a 700 mm gauge railway. There are reconstructions of the turf cottages built by the first settlers, a bakery that uses peat as its fuel, and a windmill.
