Norwegian Fishing Village Museum

The Norwegian Fishing Village Museum at Å i Lofoten displays the history of the Lofoten Islands fisheries over the past 250 years. It was established in 1989 and has the appearance of a Skansen-type open air museum, although most of the nine buildings are on their original sites. A stone-built bakery of 1844 is renowned for producing cinnamon buns as well as traditional bread. Other buildings include a grocery shop in a house of 1843, a boathouse containing traditional Nordland wooden boats, a cod liver oil factory and a blacksmith’s forge. The most cherished building is the rorbu, a traditional fisherman’s house, open only with guides, six times daily.
