Norrbotten Railway Museum

The museum is at Karlsvikshytan railway station in the area that was once the Luleå ironworks. Its main role since it was established in the 1980s is to preserve and display objects related to the Malmbanan railway, the 546-km iron-ore line built between 1888 and 1903 from the Gulf of Bothnia at Luleå to the iron-ore mines around Kiruna and the Norwegian sea at Narvik. It also shows material from elsewhere in the north of Sweden. The museum and its voluntary association own around 140 vehicles which are displayed outside and in two exhibition halls. They include steam, electric and diesel locomotives from throughout the 20th century, ore wagons dating between 1886 and 1980 and historical goods wagons and passenger cars. Several diesel and electric locomotives are in working order and carry visitors in summer on the Gammelstad-Karlsvikshytan railway. Other items include a station house from Koskullskulle, a switchgear from Svartön and photographs, uniforms and objects associated with the operation of the railways.
