The museum is part of National Museums Scotland. It is sited at a military airfield about 30 kilometres east of Edinburgh. The collection was started very early – in 1909 – when the national museum acquired a Hawk glider, a Wright model A and a Blériot XI. With the increasing expansion of the collection it moved in 1975 from Edinburgh city centre to the East Fortune Airfield. It is now one of the most comprehensive aviation collections in Europe, covering military, civil and recreational flight with over 40 aircraft. The hangar devoted to military aviation shows among others, a Spitfire, a Tornado, a Messerschmidt and a Harrier jump-jet together with associated weaponry. Another hangar explores the many purposes of civil aviation. Other original buildings on the site are displayed to present the history of the airfield from its establishment in 1914. Among the star items is a Concorde from 1976, the world’s only supersonic passenger plane, which visitors can walk through.
