National Gas Museum

The collection of artefacts at the museum in Leicester is one of the largest and most important in Europe relating to the manufacture, distribution and domestic uses of gas. The museum was established by the nationalised gas corporation in 1977 at a time of great change in the industry, when coal gas in the UK was being replaced by natural gas from the North Sea, with the objective of preserving the knowledge and skills that had sustained the industry. In 1997, when the privatised industry was de-merged, the museum passed into the care of a trust. The collection is located in the gatehouse of the Aylestone Road gasworks, which began production in 1878.
