Museum of Typography by Yannis and Eleni Garedakis

The first Museum of Typography in Greece is located in Chania, Crete, close to Souda harbour. It is a private initiative by Yannis Garedakis, founder of the local newspaper "Haniotika nea", and his wife Eleni, who have been collecting, for over thirty years, machines and other exhibits that mark the evolution of European Typography, the art that was born in the 15th century in Gutenberg's workshop and literally changed the course of history.

The museum consists of two large wings and three individual halls covering an area of approximately 1,200 m². Visitors are encouraged to print at cast iron printing presses of the 19th century, while videos explain how many of the techniques in exhibition, operate. At the last hall, through selected rare books, newspapers, engravings and lithographs from the 16th – 19th centuries, visitors have the opportunity to learn more about the turbulent history of Crete.
