Museum of Transport, Greater Manchester

This is emphatically a museum of road transport, particularly of buses. More than seventy vehicles are displayed in what seems to visitors to be a huge bus garage. The museum is maintained almost entirely by volunteers. There is a horse bus from the 1890s and a tram car of 1906, but the principal collection is of motor buses from north-west England, the oldest of them from the early 1930s. There are sixteen from the former Manchester Corporation network, six from Stockport and four from Salford, as well as six from the private North Western company. There are also two trolley buses, a prototype tramcar of 1990 from the present-day Metrolink network, and six long-distance coaches, the earliest of 1947.
