Museum of Iron

The Museum of Iron was opened in 1984, when the building was acquired by Civiltà Bresciana Foundation to be transformed in a museum-laboratory of industrial archaeology. It is located in the oldest proto-industrial area of the city, but the hammer forge was in function until the end of the XX Century. In its external area, Museum of Iron shows the historic role of the water wheels: the canal provides the energy to move one wheel. Inside, a multimedial exhibition tells the story of the iron mining and the production of iron tools, with a final immersion  in an authentic  hammer mill environment. The principal aim of the museum is to gain an understanding of the territory from an environmental, technical and social point of view. Recently, the water wheel and the hydraulic supply systems of the hammer mill have been renovated. Museum includes also an area for temporary events, an audiovisual room and a space for laboratories.

Museum of Iron is part of musil – Museum of Industry and Labor of Brescia, a little network of 3 industrial museums in the province of Brescia.
