Museum of Industrial Clock Making

The Wuerttembergische Clock Factory is located in the center of the city of Schwenningen, once called the world’s largest clock town. It is considered the oldest clock factory in the former German state of Wuerttemberg. The factory’s founder Johannes Buerk, started his manufacturing career with an invention in 1855. His portable control clock for night watchmen proved an instant success and provided the basis for manufacturing these clocks for over 100 years.

Today the Museum for Industrial Clock Making in the old factory features carefully restored and fully operational manufacturing machinery. „To relive industrial history“ is the aim of the museum’s founders. Beyond showing the technical aspects, special attention is paid to the social and economic facts of the factory age. Enjoy a comprehensive, often humorous and sometimes playful look at the clock industry. Experts show the manufacture of a mechanical alarm clock. A colourful range of products from the past 100 years and from over 100 Black Forest clock manufacturers is testimony to the multi-facetted world of mass-produced clocks.

In 2003 the Museum for Industrial Clock Making has won the Luigi Micheletti Prize dedicated by the European Museum Forum as the best technical museum of the year.
