Museum of Glass and Ceramic

The museum of Großalmerode, the „city of good clay”, takes its visitors on a trip through 800 years of clay work and glass-making, showing the development of local trades and their impact on the people involved, with a primary focus on the time from the beginning of the industrialization until the 1950s and 1960s.

The exhibition illustrates the mining and processing of the clay that was taken from the nearby Hirschberg, a place still rich in lignite. The range of products made in Großalmerode, accumulated over centuries, includes domestic pottery, clay pipes, marbles, jars as used in pharmacies, tailor’s chalk as well as large-size crucibles and highly specialized refractory bricks of modern use. Simulated work stations and two DVD terminals provide insight into various working environments now and then whereas state-of-the-art media visualize the transportation of the clay and the application of the products.

The rich depots of high-quality clay, sand and woodlands attracted glassblowers who settled down here since the Middle Ages, making Großalmerode a center of glass production and the headquarter of the Gläsnerbund (association of glassblowers). This period of regional Waldglasproduktion (woodland glass production) is subject of an own exhibition.
