Museum of Bread

The imaginative museum of bread at Seia has proved extremely popular since its opening in 2002. It comprehensively displays the place of bread in the social, economic and cultural history of Portugal, with features that include songs sung by millers, dough puppets and the place of bread in the political manifestoes that called for the end of the fascist regime in 1974. Exhibits include tools used by bakers and millers, and display concerning characteristic Portuguese cuisine, including ‘acorda’, a porridge made with old bread, olive oil and seafood. There is a working bakery demonstrating how the traditional bread called ‘broas’ is made. The restaurant is decorated with artistic creations made from Portuguese varnished bread.
