Müze Gazhane / Hasanpaşa Gasworks Park and Museum Complex

Hasanpaşa Gasworks complex is an industrial site which is located in Anatolian part of İstanbul. The complex was constructed as a Gasworks in 1892 (Ottoman Era). The complex had produced gas from coal until 1993, when natural gas had been transfered to Istanbul.

As its function stoped at 1993, it was planned to demolish the building complex, however by the resistance of local NGO’s, the site declared as a protected area. Converting the site into a cultural center was long debated and the construction process had started in 2014. In 2021, Hasanpaşa Gasworks Park and Museum Complex started functioning as cultural center at the heart of İstanbul. Since then, the complex serves to the locals and tourists with its library, theather, social areas etc.

The site grands the experience of an industrial area within the concept of urban area to visitors. This is what the complex is different than its counterparts. Thus it creates a different experience than an ordinary museum.
