The blast furnace at Moira in the coalfield of north-west Leicester was built between 1804 and 1806 and worked for only two campaigns, the last of them in 1810-11. It was adapted as housing in the 19th century but has been thoroughly restored since 1980, and is one of the best-preserved furnaces in Europe. The furnace is now the centre of a country park. The canal alongside it has been restored, and visitors can take trips in boats, as well as exploring a landscape where it is possible to see a bank of seven limekilns, sections of early railways and a Newcomen steam engine house of 1805.
