The museum is in the former canteen of a working locomotive depot at Meiningen station. It opened in 2024. The Werra Railway came to the town in 1858 and the depot was built in 1863 with a roundhouse and turntable for 12 tracks. After Meiningen became an important railway junction, another turntable and locomotive shed were added. By 1902, 350 people worked in the depot. Regional trains are still serviced there and the workshops repair and reconstruct steam locomotives. In the museum, the main exhibit is a Prussian T 13 steam locomotive of the type built between 1909 and 1922. It is cut into longitudinal sections so visitors can see the interior and understand how it operated, assisted by interactive displays. They can also enter the driver’s cab. A rich photographic archive illustrates the importance of railways to the town of Meiningen. The workshops can be visited as part of a guided tour.
