MAGMA Museum of Cast Iron Arts in MAremma

Follonica is a town on the Tuscan coast, where in 1834 Leopold II, the Duke of Tuscany, established the Royal and Imperial Foundry. Nowadays, the complex is located in the heart of the town and it is part of a major redevelopment project. A cast-iron triumphal archway gives access to the old factory. It was designed by Carlo Reishammer (1806-83), as was the nearby Saint Leopold's Church, built in 1836-38. The Church is a unique example of how cast iron can be used for ornamental purposes.

The Magma Museum preserves and presents the history of the regional iron industry from a technical, artistic and social point of view. The exhibition is divided into three themes: Art on the first floor, Human and Natural Resources on the second floor and the process of smelting cast iron on the lower-ground floor. The central area is characterised by a cascade of thin metal sheets in colours reminiscent of the smelting process. In the basement there are regular projections of a film showing the techniques of iron making in the nineteenth century. A visit to Magma is an interactive experience thanks to the multimedia tools used, which appeal to both young and old visitors.
