Karlholm Ironworks

Karlsholm bruk was established in 1719 by the de Geer family, who were of Walloon origin, and is one of the most important monuments of the iron industry in Sweden. In the 18th century wrought-iron was made in a Walloon forge and rolled in a plate mill, but in 1879 a Lancashire forge was constructed, and worked until the early 1930s. It is exceptionally well-preserved, and visitors are able to see Lancashire hearths, water-powered and steam-powered hammers, a rolling mill and water wheels. The manor house of the bruk, a bell tower and workers’ dwellings remain alongside the forge buildings.
