Hurtigruten Museum

Stokmarknes is a small port town in the north of Norway. The museum tells the story of the shipping route along the coast that was vitally important before good roads and aeroplanes. The steamship company Vesteraalen was established at Stokmarknes in 1881. The name Hurtigruten refers to the coastal express route and the shipping company set up by government contract in 1893 to improve communications along the coastline of Norway. It carried the postal service, fish, freight and passengers. Later the ships turned to tourist cruises. The MS Finnmarken built in 1956 is part of the mueum. An exciting new building in 2020 shows the displays and the Finnmarken put behind glass and under cover.
