Gonzen Mine

Sargans is a town of about 6000 people which grew up around a medieval castle in the Canton of St Gallen in eastern Switzerland. The nearby Gonzen mine, a source of iron ores including haematite and magnetite has a long history but ceased operation in 1966. A non-profit organisation to conserve and interpret its history was set up in 1983 and now offers guided tours through some of the 90 km of tunnels that comprised the former workings. Visitors can also see displays of compressors, rotary hammers and other machines used to extract ores, and the railways, with inclined planes, along which ore was taken to the surface.
