Fragonard Perfume Museum

Fragonard is one of three historic perfume makers based at Grasse on the French Riviera, a region well placed to provide the materials used in perfume. The original Fragonard factory in the centre of the town has a museum where visitors can explore the history of the business and tour the production line. The handsome three-storey building dates from 1782 and was one of the first perfume-making premises in Grasse. The Fragonard brand was begun in 1926 and takes its name from the French painter born at Grasse in 1732. The museum area on the top floor was opened in 1975. It has a display about the long history of perfume, including Ancient Egyptian and Medieval artefacts, period graphics and ephemera, historical equipment and a collection of bottles. The factory tour shows visitors the laboratories and studios for mixing perfumes and the processes of filtering ingredients, distillation, bottling and soap-making. The tour ends in the factory shop.

The history of perfume making over the centuries is presented at the 'Musée International de la Parfumerie' (2 Boulevard du Jeu de Ballon).
