Fradley Junction

Fradley junction is a favourite spot for gongoozlers. A ‘gongoozler’ was what boaters used to call someone getting in the way on the towpath, at a time when narrow boats were hauled by horses, along the ‘towing-path’. Today, gongoozling is a popular hobby, and many people enjoy watching the colourful narrow boats navigating the locks. It is also good to be out in the countryside, and the canal-side wildlife is as interesting as the boats.

The staff at the Canal & River Trust welcome station are there to welcome you to the junction and will be happy to explain the importance of it to the boating traffic today and in the past. The Trent & Mersey and the Coventry Canal were once packed with boats from around the country. Fradley Junction is still a busy place, but now the boats carry holiday-makers instead of coal or pottery.
