Flour Milling Ecomuseum of Castelló d’Empúries

Castelló d’Empúries is a small town in the Catalan province of Gerona and the ecomuseum is part of the Museu de la Ciècia I de la Tēcnica de Catalunya based in Terrassa. The ecomuseum is based in a flour mill to which the first references date from 1331. It was transformed from the 1860s by the installation of roller milling equipment (in Spanish, the Sistema austrohúngaro) which originated in Budapest in 1837 and spread rapidly across Europe in the late nineteenth century. Visitors are taken on guided tours of the three main floors of the mill. The mill is the starting point of a 5 km. trail along the watercourse Rec de Molí, past orchards and side channels used to irrigate crops, to the medieval ramparts of the town. One important point on the trail is the Francis turbine installed in 1905 that generated electric power to work the roller milling system in the mill, and also to provide street lighting for the town. The water was also used in the town’s open air laundry, in drinking troughs for draught animals, and for flushing the walls and floors of the town’s slaughterhouse. Like most ecomuseums that in Castelló d’Empúries seeks to engage with the townspeople and to provide educational facilities for schoolchildren as well as to interest tourists.
