The Finnish Aviation Museum occupies a site close to Helsinki’s Vantaa international airport. It originated with a collection displayed by the Aviation Museum Society from 1969 which was exhibited elsewhere at Vantaa from 1972. The first of the present museum buildings was opened in 1981, and extensions were added in 1985, 1989, 1995 and 1998. In 1996 the museum was taken into the care of the Finnish Aviation Museum Foundation, and was formally recognised as a national museum the following year. The collection includes about 80 civil and military aircraft (some of them fuselages only), of which 72 are currently displayed. They include a Douglas DC-3 Dakota and MIG fighters made in the USSR, examples of which are in many museums, but also an imposing Convair Metropolitan, of which relatively few were built, and many aircraft built in Finland or Eastern Europe. The collection also includes many components, engines, propellers, radio sets, and there are many aircraft models. Airline timetables and route maps are displayed, and there is a large library and photographic archive.
