FERRUM. The World of Iron

The area around the market town of Ybbitz, 35 km south-east of Steyr, and 45 km north of the Iron Mountain was celebrated from the sixteenth century for the products of the many smiths who settled there, which were exported to distant parts of Europe. The region continues to produce steel wire, tools, enamelled household utensils, pressure cookers and constructional steel work.

FERRUM is an interactive study and entertainment centre located in an historic building on the town’s market square, restored by the municipality in 2006. The oldest parts date from the 16th century, although its exterior is in the Baroque style with a Mansard roof.  The displays interpret nine themes in the history of ironmaking, from prehistory to the present, which include a space odyssey, blacksmithing and the operation of a virtual hammer.

From the museum visitors can follow a trail, ‘The Mile of Forges’ which includes important monuments of ironmaking in and around the town.
