Estonian National Museum

The museum at Tartu is primarily concerned with ethnography, but it has particularly important collections of clothing from the eighteenth, nineteenth and twentieth centuries. It was established in 1909 and dedicated to the memory of Jacob Hurt, Estonia’s greatest folk-loreist. Its principal permanent exhibition is entitled ‘Estonia: Land, People, Culture’. The collections include a large film archive, which is a valuable source for the material culture of the twentieth century. The costumes include many leather garments and accessories. It is some indication of the museum’s lively thinking that the garments include a jacket worn by a Tallin punk between 1982 and 1985.
