The Estonian Dairy Museum was founded in 1976, when Estonia was still part of the USSR, but it was not opened until 2001. It is located in a dairy established by Joint Dairy Society of Estonia in 1938. The museum receives support from most of the dairy companies in the country. It portrays the growth of a more scientific approach to dairy farming and the processing of milk products in Estonia, as in other European countries, in the late nineteenth century. There are demonstrations of the manufacture of butter and ice cream, and visitors have the opportunity to dress up as dairy workers. A popular feature is the making of a glazed curd snack, an Estonian speciality.
