Erzbergbahn

The Erzberg Railway is a standard-gauge rack railway that climbs a very steep gradient in the Austrian Alps. It was completed in 1891 by the Austrian Alpine Mining Company (Österreichischen Alpine Montangesellschaft) to carry iron ore. It closed in 1988 but was taken over by a voluntary association and now carries passengers. Rail-bus services run from July to October. The spectacular route through mountain scenery has five tunnels and eight viaducts. Where it crosses the Präbichl pass it is 1,204 metres above sea level. The railway has its own museum in the Vordernberg station. It includes models, the cab of a steam locomotive, pictures and documents. Outside the station in the middle of the town is a preserved steam locomotive.
