Enigma is a museum of communications established in 1997. Its name comes from the Ancient Greek word for a spoken riddle. It is housed in the former post office in Østerbro, where it cares for Denmark's national collections of the post and telecommunications industries, including the country’s largest stamp collection. Through sophisticated interactive exhibitions it explores many historical and current issues connected with communication, such as mass surveillance, confidentiality and fake news. Technology and invention are also explored, beginning with early postal services and continuing through telegraph, telephone and wireless communication. The role of Danish entrepreneurs and inventors is highlighted, such as invention of the bow transmitter in 1902 by Valdemar Poulsen and the promotion of radio by Aksel Lykstoft in the 1920s. Old broadcasts from radio and television are played. A children’s space called Teleportalen uses physical objects to explain the digital world and a basement gallery presents computer games of all generations.
