The tide mill at Eling, on the west side of the north end of Southampton Water, is the only one of its kind in England that is still working and productive. A tide- powered mill has occupied the site for nine centuries, but the present mill building and dam date from a rebuilding in the 1770s, and the cast-iron wheels from a refurbishment of 1892. The mill fell into disrepair in the 1940s, but from 1978 was restored by a trust. One of the two waterwheels operates the machinery that regularly produces wholemeal flour, but tide mills elsewhere were used for sawing timber, and for many other purposes.
