Boom, in the Rupel valley, 15 km south of Antwerp, was the centre of the principal brick-making area in Belgium, which, in 1900, was producing 1,000,000,000 bricks a year, using coal from the Charleroi region delivered by canal. The remains of the Hoffman kilns, used from about 1870, dominate the landscape of the region. The museum which interprets the history of the brick-making industry is based in the former Frateur works.
