Cotswold Motoring Museum & Toy Collection

The museum opened in 1978 in the village of Bourton-on-the-Water, which is often called the most beautiful village in England. It began with the work of a private collector, Mike Cavanagh, and now belongs to a national motoring club. It has over 50 vehicles in seven galleries. The collection includes cars, motorbikes, caravans and a collection of historical advertising signs and artefacts such as picnic baskets, petrol cans, clothes and even car-shaped teapots. The oldest cars go back to the early 1900s and the most recent is from 1974. Most are by British makers such as Austin, BMC, Jaguar, MG and Triumph but there are also vintage cars by Fiat, BMW, Ford and Volvo. Visitors can also see a reconstructed petrol station and a blacksmith’s shop. Part of the museum is devoted to toys, including pedal cars, toy cars and board games. The entrance building is a large nineteenth-century corn mill.
