Chiemsee Railway

The Chiemseebahn, on the shore of Bavaria’s largest lake, is the only one of the many steam tramways built in Europe in the late 19th that is still operated with its original equipment. Its 2 km course links the station at Prien, on the railway from Munich to Saltzburg, with the pier at Stock, from which ships of the Fessler company, established in 1846, sail to various destinations on the lake, but principally to Herreninsel and the castle of Herrenchiemsee, built in the 19th century by King Ludwig II of Bavaria. Most trains are worked by a tram locomotive built in 1887 by Krauss of Munich.
