Catalonia Railway Museum

This open-air museum next to the Renfe Rodalies railway station celebrates the history of the railway in Catalonia from its beginning in 1848. The museum opened in 1990 and is housed in the city’s former locomotive depot, built at the end of the nineteenth century. The collection includes more than sixty vehicles from all eras and countries, including twenty-eight steam locomotives from the late-nineteenth century. Diesel and electric locomotives such as the Estado-Renfe 1000-1004, and the first Talgo train are on display. Visitors can climb into the driver’s cabs of several locomotives or sit in the passenger carriages. A replica of the ‘Mataró’ - the first train to operate on the Iberian Peninsula in 1848 - is used for demonstrations. The rich collections include a signal bridge as well as numerous smaller items covering the whole range of railway technology. The museum’s library contains books on trains and vehicles, original documentation and thousands of videos and photographs.
