Braunston

Braunston was one of the most important junctions on the English canal system, the starting point of the Grand Junction Canal, opened in 1805, which linked it to London, and the point where it was joined by the Oxford Canal, which took boats to central southern England, and also provided connections to Birmingham and the north. The visitor centre at Braunston provides guidance to the many features of interest along the canal, boat-building yards, one with a dry dock of considerable age, junctions, footbridges, and the 1867 m tunnel through which boats were pulled by steam tugs. Several lanes in the villages were the homes of boatpeople who travelled all over the canal system.
