The Blonay-Chamby Museum Railway rises into the mountains above Lac Leman with spectacular views. It was created by volunteers in 1968 and operates with restored steam and electric locomotives. It is connected at both ends to public railways and uses 3km of the Chemins de fer électriques Veveysans, which opened in 1902. The railway ascends roughly 130m from Blonay station to Chambry station, where two depots show an outstanding collection of some 80 items of rolling stock of 1000mm-gauge. This was the predominant choice of narrow-gauge in Switzerland and Germany. Steam locomotives range from a tramway engine made in 1882 by the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works (SLM) to a German Maschinenfabrik Esslingen locomotive of 1927. Electric locomotives range from 1899 to 1916 and there are three diesel locomotives from the inter-war period. Electric trams and railcars have come from several Swiss lines. Over 20 passenger coaches are maintained; one by Chevalier, Chailus and Son in Paris for the Lausanne-Bercher railway dates from as early as 1865. There are also many examples of goods wagons and specialist vehicles.
