The Basque Maritime Museum is located in one of the few buildings that survived when the city was burned to the ground by British and Portuguese troops after the siege of 1813. The museum has no permanent exhibition but annually presents several large temporary exhibitions on the Basque maritime history and heritage and the relationship between mankind and the sea. The exhibitions are accompanied by a wide range of educational programmes.
