Azerbaijan Museum of Carpets

Carpets have been a characteristic manufacture of the people of Azerbaijan for more than three thousand years, and Azerbaijani textiles were inscribed by UNESCO on the list of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2010. A museum of carpets and other applied arts was opened within a fifteenth century mosque while Azerbaijan was part of the USSR in 1967, and the displays were later moved to the Lenin Museum. A new five-storey building, designed by the Austrian architect Franz Janz, opened in 2014. It is one of the most striking pieces of architecture in the centre of Baku having the appearance of a rolled-up carpet. The displays illustration the distinctive styles and designs from the various regions of Azerbaijan, including Kuba, Baku, Shirvan, Karabagh and Tabris. There are demonstrations of carpet weaving techniques. The museum also includes displays of jewellery, copper goods, shoes and traditional clothes.
