Art and Craft Centre, Handicraft Cooperative

Slovenska Bistrica prides in rich traditional craftsmanship, which, as a precursor to industry, has had a significant impact on the development and expansion of the town. Records show that pottery was one of the most common activities in the area due to the availability of clay located in the surrounding area. As there are no more traditional potters in Slovenska Bistrica today, the Art and Craft Centre, Handicraft Cooperative is trying to preserve the pottery's cultural heritage in their facility, which located in the town centre, in the courtyard of Slovenska Bistrica Castle.

The center has been operating since 2003. In year 2014 it became a social enterprise Handicraft Cooperative. It is also a part of the network of the Consortium of Handicraft Centers of Slovenia. The center dedicates to the transfer of traditional handicraft skills to younger generations and to the development of modern ceramics. Ceramic products and interpretations of old pottery "From Grandma's Kitchen and Grandpa's Cellar" are created in the centre. They are made by hand using traditional techniques and technology.

At the centre, visitors can see various exhibitions, buy products and attend adventure workshops, where they learn about pottery as part of intangible cultural heritage, through the presentation of pottery products and the process of its production. They can also experience making clay products. The workshops are suitable for participants of all ages, and the resulting products are upgraded into useful peaces by firing and glazing. This is also performed at the centre. If desired the peaces can be delivered to the participants.

Handicraft heritage in Slovenska Bistrica is part of the INSPIRACIJA (INSPIRATION) project, whos main goal is to encourage revitalisation of towns rich of industrial heritage in Slovenia and Croatia – Trbovlje, Slovenska Bistrica, Labin and Rijeka – by creating new tourist content to reanimate once active industrial facilities.
