Arnao Mine and Museum

In 1833, a Belgian company settled in Arnao with a radically innovative project in Asturias, a vertical pit was drilled for the extraction of coal below sea level. Today, its spectacular headframe is one of the most striking elements of the museum. The underwater mine continued working until the Cantabrian Sea partially flooded it in 1915.

Currently, visitors can enjoy a museum with modern exhibition facilities and visit the mine's vaulted brick galleries. In the surroundings, workers' houses and facilities connected to the industrial past of the location are preserved, together with a historic zinc plant, which is still active.
