Archaelogical Mines Park of San Silvestro

Campiglia Marittima is a town on the Etruscan coast. The nearby Parco Archeominerario di San Silvestro extends over 450 ha in the heart of the Val di Cornia and aims to give visitors an understanding of mining and the metallurgical industries from the Etruscan era to the present. The mines in the region principally extracted lead ores but also some copper and silver. The park incorporates an archaeological and mineralogical museum.

Visitors can walk 360 m into the Miniera del Temperino, and see varied rocks and minerals as well as traces of the work of miners. They can also ride on a train into the Lanzi-Temperino tunnel, where the shapes and colours of the rocks and minerals are spectacular. At the far end of the tunnel the train emerges into the Lanzi valley where visitors can see the highlight of the park, the deserted medieval village of Rocco San Silvestro, a mining and ironworking community of the tenth and eleventh centuries.
