The museum has a collection of 250 gas and oil engines, many of which are in working order, and two steam engines. It first opened in 1989. Many of the engines were made in Manchester. The collection includes engines by Atkinson, Furnival, Gardner, Mirrlees, Robey and Ruston & Hornsby. There is also a scale model of the town of Poynton and the local coal mines in about 1900. The museum is located on the site of the Anson coal mine. It is opened by volunteers on Fridays and Sundays. Engines are run whenever the museum is open and there are demonstrations by a blacksmith.
