Albaola the Maritime Heritage Factory

Albaola the Maritime Heritage Factory is a shipyard-museum dedicated to the promotion and development of Basque maritime heritage. It focuses particularly on the construction of historic boats and ships and retaining the traditional skills involved in and around shipbuilding, such as ropemaking, sailmaking and iron forging. All this work is carried out in front of the visitors.

The Factory is located on the ancient premises of the Ascorreta shipyard, built between 1950 and 1964. The shipyard especialised in the maintenance and repair of the fishing fleet of the port of Pasaia, in which was based the biggest cod-fishing fleet of Spain and one of the biggest in Europe. With the decline of cod fishing in Canadian waters and the general crisis in the fishing sector in the last quarter of the 20th century the fishing fleet shrunk dramatically; Ascorreta shipyards were badly hit by the crisis and, after several difficult years, in 2002 ceased its activity for good.

In 2009, after several years of neglect, the old premises were used to accommodate a collection of boats of heritage value gathered by the Diputación Foral of Gipuzkoa. In 2014, after two years of adaptation, Albaola the Maritime Heritage Factory opened its doors to the public. The adaptation was carried out with minimal alteration to the buildings, slipyards and quays.
