The industrial landscape resulted from the iron smelting activities of Ajuria & Urigoitia, one of the first steel mills in the country. Visitors have the chance to see the state’s first electric induction furnace and the first blast furnace of Euskadi. Situated at the entrance to the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park they form one of the most beautiful industrial landscapes of the Basque country with dams, forests, industrial warehouses …
Another part of this landscape is the network of canals once used to supply the water needed for the generation of energy and used in the manufacturing process in the Ajuria and Urigoitia foundries.
The factory of Ajuria & Urigoitia was provided with the iron from the mines near its facilities: most of these mines are present on the slopes of the nearby mountains, and their remains are still visible as part of a unique landscape, linked to the extraction of iron in Asparrena.
