THE EUROPEAN YEAR OF CULTURAL HERITAGE EYCH 2018 "OUR HERITAGE: WHERE THE PAST MEETS THE FUTURE"
The European Commission has declared 2018 as the European Year of Cultural Heritage. It will celebrate both: our common cultural roots and the cultural diversity of the continent, and both come together in the European industrial heritage, the specific cultural legacy of a Europe of regions.
ERIH ACTIVITIES CELEBRATING EYCH 2018
BROCHURE: EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE
From its very beginning, industrialisa-tion has crossed borders - it was never a purely national phenomenon. But most visitors are still unaware of this. The brochure "European Industrial Heritge: The International Story" aims to encourage ERIH sites to present the European dimension of industrialisation to their visitors. Like the ERIH theme routes, the brochure outlines the history of the various industrial sectors, thus creating an exciting European narrative. Of course this is not intended to be exhaustive. Rather, it seeks to encourage its readers to focus particularly on the transnational aspects of European industrial heritage and provide ideas for including the international story in the sites’ presentations.
PRESENTATION: CHANGE WITH IMPACT
The presentation "Change with Impact" illustrates the transformation of industrialized regions in Europe and gives an impression of the diversity of European industrial heritage. This is shown on information boards presenting and demonstrating ERIH's Regional Routes in Lusatia (D) and Styria (A), in Catalonia (E) and Silesia (PL) as well as in South Wales (GB) and Holland (NL). They also clarify how even smaller industrial sites have changed the geographical and social landscape. The presentation was developed especially for the exhibition area in the circular thickener I of the "Portal of Industrial Heritage" at Zollverein Mine World Heritage in Essen. In 2018 a mobile version will travel to various ERIH sites in Europe.
ERIH DANCE EVENT: "WORK it OUT"
May 1st is celebrated internationally as Labour Day. ERIH organized a special event on Labour Day 2018 which united ERIH-sites all over Europe with a spectacular dance event for kids and teens: "WORK it OUT". Children and young people are the future of industrial culture. On May 1st 2018 they brought their vitality and ‘joie de vivre’ to ERIH-sites in many countries with an exciting, simultaneous music and dance performance. Photos and videos from the sites were posted on social media, instantly sharing and publicising the performances across Europe. The result was the creation of a unique, lively, and unforgettable kaleidoscope of European industrial culture.
During the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018, the participating sites will focus on objects that are exemplary of the European, and also global, dimension of industrial development.
Smaller objects can be exhibited in a prominently placed showcase. Additional information can be presented in such a display case or larger signs can be placed in the open space for larger objects or buildings of the industrial cultural heritage. Typically, these are object pairs, at least one of which is related to another site in Europe. The number of pairs of objects in the display case should be limited so that the objects appear "exposed" and not "set".
